God Save Her
As an American, I admit that I really don't 'get' the Royal Family. I know that they are mostly a symbol for British Pride, but at the same time it doesn't seem like most British people are all that fond of them. They cost the country a lot of money and people seem to hold them responsible when unpopular laws are passed, but don't actually have any power in the government. However, I am not allowed to say that around a British person unless I want to get punched in the face. Much like having a sibling, the British citizens are allowed to make fun of the Royal Family but the second someone from outside the country says something they get very mad. (Except for Prince Charles, as I think everyone is allowed to take shots at that guy.) Still, even more confusing is the American media fascination with the Royals. From Princess Diana to last year's wedding of Prince William to Princess Kate, they get almost as much coverage over here as in their own country. Considering all that went in to the American Revolution the media fascination is almost akin to getting a divorce and then still checking on your ex through Facebook. That fascination is why it is not surprising to see so many stories over the last couple of days about the Queen's diamond jubilee celebration, commemorating her 60 years on the throne. Well, even if I don't quite know what she does, sticking with one job for over half a century gets you a musical interlude. Cheers!
